This festival is celebrated in our country with great faith and esteem.
Jupiter has been given the best place in our culture. From ancient times till today, Guru has always been given the best status. Guru shapes the life of the disciple by his conduct. Guru is also called Acharya. Acharya Devo Bhava. Our Puranas have also described the greatness of Guru. Guru has been given the status of God.
The day of Guru Purnima is the day to reveal the love of Guru Shishya. Guru Purnima is also called Vyasa Purnima. Today, Guru Poornima is celebrated grandly in schools and colleges. In ancient times, sages used to live in forest by building an ashram. The disciples used to go to Guru’s ashram to get education. For the first twenty five years of life, the disciples used to stay in the guru’s ashram and study. He earned his living by begging for alms from the surrounding areas. Some used to cut wood and some used to collect necessary things and fruits.
Guru used to impart life useful knowledge to his disciples. At this time, along with the study of the scriptures in the ashrams, the disciples were given knowledge of weaponry like archery. At the same time the disciples were made proficient in various arts useful in life. Useful tasks in daily life were also trained.
On the day of Guru Purnima, the disciples used to give Gurudakshina to the Guru according to their strength. In which they do not hesitate to give fruits, herbs or their favorite things. If we remember the Gurushishya tradition of ancient times, the names of many disciples come to mind. How can we forget Gurubhakta Eklavya. Ekalavya went to Guru Dronacharya to learn archery, but due to his caste, Dronacharya did not allow him to come to his ashram.
Even this incident did not diminish his devotion to Guru. He himself acquired and mastered archery by making an idol of Guru in the forest. Guru Dronacharya approached Ekalavya after hearing the praise of Ekalavya who was more skilled than Arjuna in archery. He asked for Eklavya’s right thumb in Guru Dakshina. He had immense respect even for the Guru who did not accept him as a disciple.. Without thinking for a moment he cut off his thumb and gave it to Guru Dakshina, otherwise Eklavya would have been considered a greater man in history than Arjuna. What a great sacrifice for Guru. Guru Dakshina – Guru Dakshina is generally taken to mean reward. But it has a wider meaning.
The first guru of a child is considered to be its birth mother. That’s why it is said, “A hundred teachers are good for one.” He spends his early life with his mother and learns a lot during that time. The mother has a second place in raising the child and instilling the rites. The effect of rituals given in childhood is always there in his life.
A young child does not forget what is taught to him throughout his life, just as a bud is bent. At this time the child learns good manners and ideals of life only from the mother. It is a mother’s duty to inculcate many good habits from childhood like the habit of speaking the truth, respecting others, saluting elders, not stealing, not speaking abusive language, eating nutritious food .
Today’s education system has changed. Gurus have been replaced by teachers and ancient ashrams have been replaced by today’s schools and colleges. A child goes to a teacher for studies from the age of five. Along with literacy, the teachers teach the children about various arts like music, drama, dance, painting, etc. Children are taught discipline and good habits along with studies .
Along with the units of study, values education lessons and life ideals are inculcated. Children are taught lessons of love of nature and compassion for animals. Lessons of global unity, world peace and gender equality are taught. From basic knowledge to various technical and different disciplines, the child is imparted knowledge. One doctor cannot prepare another doctor, one lawyer cannot prepare another lawyer, one engineer cannot prepare an engineer but only one teacher can prepare them all. That is why the place of guru or teacher is always the best and always will be.
Indeed, in our culture, the position of Guru has been considered the highest for years. We should always respect Guru. True Guru Dakshina is that you spread the knowledge and knowledge acquired by your Guru. And using it properly, do useful work for society, protect nature and country. Have compassion for human beings as well as for nature. Gurudakshina shows respect and devotion towards Guru.
