As per data available in the Times of India, approximately 7,996 fatal accidents occurred in 2018 alone, which claimed the lives of about 1462 men and 234 women in the state of Gujarat.
What is Car Insurance?
Interestingly, 50% of the deceased were in the age range of 18 and 35 years, and the resultant cause of accidents was attributed to rash driving and failure to comply with safety regulations. (1)
So, what did the government do to tackle the situation?
To discourage such indifference among residents, the central government amended the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 to reveal a hike in the traffic fines, levied as a consequence of traffic violations like negligent driving and poor road sense.
However, such extreme penalty charges can lead to severe distraught among the public, as it imposes unwarranted financial strain. Keeping in mind the welfare of ordinary people, the state government headed by Vijay Rupani announced a reduction in Gujarat traffic fines of up to 90% of new rates, as imposed by the Motor Vehicles Act.
These reductions range from anywhere between 25-90% respectively, depending upon the severity of the traffic violations, as mentioned below:

Why Did the Gujarat Government Reduce the Traffic Fines?
As stated by the chief minister of the state, the primary aim behind elevating its traffic fines is to reduce traffic-related accidents corresponding with inattentive driving and road sense.
To ease the welfare level of residents of the state, penalty charges have been brought down substantially, yet increased at a specified rate to conform to the updated rules published by the central government.
Did the newly amended Motor vehicles Act help?
As per data released by the Parliament of India, the number of roadside accidents in certain states in the country fell by approximately 9% when compared with similar data released in 2018. Gujarat, in particular, witnessed a drastic fall of about 22% in overall road accidents reported.
A survey was conducted in the states of Gujarat, Chandigarh, Puducherry, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Kerala. Between 1st September and 31st October 2019, around 3375 roadside fatalities were reported, which exhibits a substantial reduction from 3,729 deaths reported last year during the same period.
